Im a command line fan, so usually I will leave this task to command line utilities like shasum, md5 which are bundled with default macOS installation.Several weeks ago, one of the Hash c alculating apps that I have purchased a long time ago (which was not updated for a long time), suddenly get a major version update.I realized it because it gets a new icon (which is definitely not beautiful, but) with a very eye-catching green color.
The name of the app is Hash Calculator 2, quite a descriptive name. The UI is rebuilt with a moderner look, but still not very fancy. Hash Calculator 2 UI Wait, now I can choose multiple hash algorithms. Well, thats new. As I remember, old version of this app can only hash file with one method a time. Hashtab Mac App StoreSince I found something new, I decide to check out the its Mac App Store introduction for Whats New. It advertised that, it can calculate multiple hash algorithms at the same time. I tested the app with some large file, like ubuntu desktop ISO file. I selected MD5, SHA1, SHA224, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512 and started the hash process. Ubuntu Desktop ISO File A 1.6GB file which could take quite a lot of time only for read, if it was read multiple times for multiple hash algorithms. But the result is quite amazing, it was very fast. I didnt even have time to open Activity Monitor to check memory footprint. File Hash for Ubuntu Desktop ISO So I calculated once again to check the Apps memory foot print. Memory Usage for Hash Calculator Wow, 31.6MB for hash a file of 1.6GB. Thats nice. The other features in the app are not very useful to me. But which make me impressed is a brand new feature in this new version of Hash Calculator: Finder integration It means I can get a quick hash result without leaving Finder. With this feature, get file hash is only two clicks away. Finder Integration The first time you use it, you should enable it via share menus More, and check Calculate Hash in System Preferences window. Since I upgraded to version 2 of Hash Calculator, I almost abandoned the command line way to get a files hash, because use Finder integration is so, so convenient This little utility is not a very polished one, but really with nice features that makes my life easier. Hash Calculator 2 Hash Calculator 2 is now at a 2.99 price tag, which is not very cheap for a small utility, but the nice little new features in it make me feel worth the money, and actually I get the free upgraded from version 1.x, a major upgrade definitely worth it Venj Mac and iOS Developer Follow 27 1 27 27 1 Mac Hash Md5 Sha1 Sha2 More from Venj Follow Mac and iOS Developer More From Medium Data Structures: Arrays Jhonny Chamoun Java Aleksandra Bystranowska-Takahashi Using a Java based Kafka Client in a Node.js application Yoni Goyhman in WalkMe Engineering gRPC: Top 6 Things that Bite Newbies Charles Thayer Upgrading a Dev Container to.NET 5.0 Manfred Lange in The Startup My journey to learn Python as a Petroleum Engineer Amin Noor Adding Life to Your Social Media Icons Michael Jiang in The Startup My Digital Analytics Quest: Will.I.Am (HeHimHis) About Help Legal Get the Medium app.
